Our historic building
The building housing the Flipje and Regional Museum has a rich history. It was constructed in 1789 on behalf of the Groote Sociëteit, a Gentlemen’s Club founded in 1764 and the oldest surviving society in the Netherlands.
Before the construction of the building, the fish market had to be relocated to the other side of the square.
The society was established to review various newspapers and to discuss them in private circles.
Weekly meetings are still held, but the building is no longer owned by the Society. The Flipje and Regional Museum is now located there.
The building to the left of the entrance is the Water Gate, also part of the museum. This Water Gate was built in 1647 but was blown up by the Germans in 1944 to make it more difficult for the Allies to enter the city. It was reconstructed in 1979. Under the roof of the façade, the 17th-century coat of arms of Tiel can be seen.
