The ‘Monument for the Regiment Stoottroepen’ in Beneden-Leeuwen is a tribute to all 374 fallen soldiers of the Regiment Stoottroepen. The monument consists of a memorial field, a chapel, three war graves, and a memorial.

In May 1940, when Germany invaded the Netherlands, the population of Culemborg left the city fearing it would be shelled. Over 9000 people from Culemborg were taken in by the populations of Beusichem and Zoelmond. The monument was offered by residents of Culemborg in gratitude for the assistance and hospitality received.

The monument is erected in memory of Major General Stanisław Sosabowski, the Polish commander who fought with his troops in the Battle of Arnhem. Major General Sosabowski and his men managed to hold the southern bank of the Rhine at Heteren and Driel from September 21 to 26, 1944. When they eventually had to withdraw themselves, there were hardly any boats available. Small groups still managed to reach the Betuwe side, but a large number perished or drowned.

Waaldijk Heerewaarden The “Hadwin & Stopher Memorial” in Heerewaarden commemorates the residents of the municipalities of Maasdriel and West Maas en Waal of the ambush at Fort Sint-Andries, in which four English soldiers lost their lives.

Monument for the American 101st Airborne Division

During a large-scale counterattack by the occupier in the Betuwe, from October 1 to 7, 1944, the 101st Airborne Division took over the positions from the British 43rd Division on October 4 between Opheusden and Elst. In the fierce battles, more than three hundred American soldiers were killed. The “Monument for the American 101st Airborne Division” is erected in honor of this division and in memory of the fallen soldiers.

The plaque in Zaltbommel’s NS station commemorates Frederik van de Wetering, a staff member of the Dutch Railways, who was killed during the war.
After the end of the Second World War, the Dutch Railways management decided to commemorate all deceased staff members by immortalizing their names on identical plaques. The plates were installed in various stations belonging to the district or area of the war victims.
