Exhibition Daalderop, from Art Nouveau to the Present

At the end of the nineteenth century, the Daalderop family, particularly Johannes Nicolaas Daalderop (1831-1901), laid the foundation for what would soon become the largest metal company in Tiel. A company that celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2024!

This exhibition is on display until March 10 2024.

(Note: the museum is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, December 31st, January 1st, Easter Sunday, and Whit Sunday.)

How it Started

The success of Daalderop began when Johannes Nicolaas Daalderop bought a house in Tiel with a Steam Copper Foundry and a yard. This business quickly outgrew its premises, and in 1889, a new factory was built. Here, production was carried out for oil lamps, pans, tin coffee pots, and coffee grinders. In 1904, lighting sources for gas and petroleum were added, as well as for the more modern ‘electricity’. This soon became a specialty of Daalderop.

1929 – 1950

After successful years – the company had been in existence for 50 years – this period saw a turning point. In New York, the stock market crashed, and a year later, the crisis also hit the Netherlands. The sale of luxury household products declined sharply. However, innovative as they were at Daalderop, they realized that they needed to broaden production. This led to the production of metal household appliances. The first hot water reservoirs were also produced.

1950 – 1973

After the war, Daalderop was back in full swing. Unfortunately, the world market then faced material shortages and rising prices. This meant restrictions in production; they could no longer produce fully. Once again, they decided to adjust their product range, and Daalderop began manufacturing, among other things, jerry cans, in large quantities. At the same time, they explored the possibilities of mass production.

1973 – 2004

Daalderop was taken over, changing from a family business to a company that is part of a large trading company. This meant a major change in the way of working: Daalderop no longer had everything in its own hands, and a clear line in the collection was no longer discernible. Then came another crisis: the oil crisis. This meant that consumers spent less money. Daalderop had to lay off some of its employees. Fortunately, at the end of the 1980s, the salvation came in the form of hot water reservoirs. The company flourished again. To this day, Daaldeop is located in Tiel, since 2003 in a new factory in the Medel industrial estate. Daalderop is clearly part of the history and hopefully also the future of Tiel.
